Its influence is as much on how we all now see ourselves as on sitcoms that followed, although it did spawn a much-loved American remake. We all recognise the David Brents (Gervais) among us - and our own Brent-like moments of self-delusion - while every office has an assistant to the regional manager like Gareth (Mackenzie Crook), a loveable Tim (Martin Freeman), a romantically trapped Dawn (Lucy Davis) and a sexist monster like Finchy (Ralph Ineson), doesn’t it?
